What is Touch Typing?
Touch Typing (also called blind typing, or touch keyboarding) is a style of typing. Although the phrase refers to typing without using the sense of sight to find the keys — specifically, a touch typist will know their location on the keyboard through muscle memory
So, training muscle memory is the primary goal of speed typing course. This technique significantly increases typing speed and accuracy.
Correct Hands Position
Maintain a relaxed and natural posture. Keep your wrists straight and avoid resting them on the desk. Place your fingers on the home row (ASDF for the left hand and JKL; for the right hand). Both thumbs are on space button.
Do you see bumps on F and J buttons? They are created exactly for you to easily find correct position without looking and keep hands on home row. Just keep your index fingers on those bumps to understand your start position. Spend some time to put your hands on keyboard without looking at it. This will help to remember hands position. Use bumps to find position, not eyes.
Key Concepts to Remember
To progress efficiently, keep these points in mind:
- Do exercises slowly. There is big desire to do it fast, but faster rate leads to higher rate of errors. Muscle memory goes first. Stay focused on accuracy to train correct muscle memory. Speed will follow.
- Never look at the keyboard when typing (use virtual keyboard as hint).
- Return fingers to the start position after pressing buttons.
- Space is better to press with hand other than the previous one used. For example: if you pressed S with left hand, then space button is pressed with right hand.
- Practice consistently: even short, regular sessions are more effective than infrequent long ones.
- Take breaks to avoid fatigue.
